What are dual credits?

Dual credits are Ministry of Education-approved courses. Students, while still in secondary school, may take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), a college diploma and/or Level 1 apprenticeship certification. Courses will be recorded on secondary school and college transcripts. Senior secondary school students can earn up to four non-compulsory credits for successfully completing a college-delivered, college course. During a semester, time at the college depends on the specific dual credit course.

Team-taught dual credit courses are ministry-approved courses delivered jointly by college instructors and secondary school teachers in a secondary school. There is no limit on the number of secondary credits that can be earned through team-taught courses taught at a secondary school.

All dual credit programs involve a dual credit secondary school teacher who can provide direct instruction, support and supervision as required.

Dual credits might interest you if you are:

• in Grade 11 or 12;
• registered in Cooperative Education;
• an Alternative Education student with schedule flexibility;
• a student who is exploring or participating in apprenticeship opportunities;
• working towards a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM); or
• a student looking to explore a college pathway option.
